Hull+Course

The hull structure course is an integral part of DNV's Hull Integrity Management package, and focuses on increasing the knowledge of hull structures in order to know where to look for damage, understand the causes and consequences of damage and be able to find remedial actions.

Summary
The shipping industry is under constant pressure from society at large to avoid serious accidents and the tolerance for accidents caused by poor maintenance / improper structural integrity is steadily decreasing. DNV possesses good structural knowledge and has a role to play in sharing this with other parties such as ship owners I managers, flag and port state inspectors, vetting institutions, insurance companies, etc. The course will increase participants' understanding of the structural configuration and response of ship structures. The course provides an introduction to basic strength theory in a way that is simple yet suitable for understanding the structural response of complex shipstructures. The following ship-type specific modules discuss structural functions and typical damage related to the different shiptypes:

  • Oil Tankers

  • Bulk Carriers

  • LNG

  • LPG

  • Container vessels

  • Ro-Ro Vessels

Objective
By taking this course, inspectors will be in a position to improve the quality of inspections by focusing on critical areas. The early detection of damage and understanding of the causes and consequences of damage will also improve a company's ability to carry out cost-effective maintenance and repair work. Improved in-house hull knowledge is also useful when communicating with external parties, such as class societies, insurance companies, vetting institutions / flag states, etc.
